Bristol Animal Rescue Centre cares for thousands of sick, injured and stray animals every year – and we couldn’t do this vital work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers come to us for many different reasons, but are united in their enthusiasm and commitment to great animal welfare. As part of Volunteer’s week this year, we’re showcasing our volunteers’ stories and what drives them to work with us.

What volunteer role do you do?

Nowadays I mainly sort out the food donations for the staff so it can be easily available for them in date and food order. I also make cards for selling at fundraising events and my local hairdresser also sells them with the proceeds going to the A.R.C.

How long have you volunteered with us for, and why did you start volunteering with us?

I have been volunteering for around 15 years and I love it. Since I retired 5 years ago I can now do more hours at Bristol A.R.C.

What do you love most about Volunteering with us at Bristol A.R.C.?

Since retiring I like to feel useful, the role gives me a purpose and makes me get on my bike and come down here to volunteer no matter what the weather is like. The staff are super grateful which certainly helps on those wet days. Since I started all those years ago I have made a lot of lifelong friends with people I wouldn’t have normally met.

Have you adopted a rescue pet from us? If so who, and can you tell us a little bit about them?

I have adopted two cats, the first was in 2005 when I adopted a Toffee, my one-eyed black cat. I had her for 12 years until she sadly died aged 17. I then adopted a 10-year-old tortoise shell cat called Chloe, who I love dearly.
