Bristol Animal Rescue Centre cares for thousands of sick, injured and stray animals every year – and we couldn’t do this vital work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers come to us for many different reasons, but are united in their enthusiasm and commitment to great animal welfare.
As part of Volunteer’s week this year, we’re showcasing our volunteers’ stories and what drives them to work with us.
What volunteer role do you do?
I do the laundry two or (sometimes) three days a week. This involves washing blankets, towels, sheets, pet beds and toys.
How long have you volunteered with us for, and why did you start volunteering with us?
7 months – I was one of Nancy’s first group of volunteers and I understand we are all still here. I am a widower and retired, and I was looking for something to do but it had to be for animals (I’m not really a people person!). My son suggested the A.R.C. so I looked it up on the interwebs – doesn’t everybody? I knew what the laundry would entail because I have been a volunteer for Secret World Wildlife Rescue and I knew what sort of state the animals’ bedding would often be in. So I applied, was accepted and haven’t looked back.
What do you love most about Volunteering with us at Bristol A.R.C.?
I think it’s the sense of satisfaction when the shelves are full of clean, neatly folded bedding and knowing that the animal carers can just come and take what they need without having to ‘make do’. It isn’t a glamorous job but it’s a necessary one.
Have you adopted a rescue pet from us? If so who, and can you tell us a little bit about them?
I wish I could have a cat or even two but I can’t afford the Vet’s bills. If I win the lottery I’ll fill out an application form the very next day!
What advice would you give to anyone considering volunteering with us?
Don’t hesitate. The people are lovely, the atmosphere is professional but relaxed and you can really feel like you’re doing something for all the animals that are abused, neglected or those with whom the previous owners can no longer cope.
