Bristol Animal Rescue Centre cares for thousands of sick, injured and stray animals every year – and we couldn’t do this vital work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers come to us for many different reasons, but are united in their enthusiasm and commitment to great animal welfare.
As part of Volunteers’ Week this year, we’re showcasing our volunteers’ stories and what drives them to work with us. Here, we ask Helen about her role with us and why she loves it at Bristol A.R.C.
What volunteer role do you do?
I am primarily a volunteer with the Fundraising Team, although I have been a dog walker in the past. Within the Fundraising Team, I usually work a day a week in the Office, doing a wide variety of admin tasks necessary to help keep things running smoothly. I also help with the planning and organising of Fundraising Events, and often help out at events themselves.
How long have you volunteered with us for, and why did you start volunteering with us?
I’ve been volunteering for around 15 years now. Initially I started dog walking and then began to help out at Fundraising Events. I’ve always valued volunteering roles, and as a huge animal lover this role was a perfect fit for me to support all the outstanding and valuable work that Bristol A.R.C do.
What do you love most about Volunteering with us at Bristol A.R.C.?
I enjoy every bit of it! Not only do I love that I am contributing in my own small way to the amazing work that Bristol A.R.C. does, I enjoy meeting the animals that are being cared for and hearing their stories, especially when they’re able to move on to their forever homes.
Have you adopted a rescue pet from us? If so who, and can you tell us a little bit about them?
Since 2005, I have adopted seven rabbits from Bristol A.R.C. Our current bunnies are called Tiggy and Pearl, who are two adorable, fluffy, white sisters who we adopted in August 2020. They live in what is now known as ’The Bunny Palace’ in our garden – a purpose built home, with indoor space for them to be shut up safely at night, and an area with many toys and platforms for them to enjoy safely every day.
What advice would you give to anyone considering volunteering with us?
Do it! You will love it. Make sure you look at all the various opportunities and see what fits into your life right now, so that you can commit to things you will have time for and enjoy. There are always opportunities for ad hoc fundraising events and activities if you are unable to make a regular commitment. I would recommend contacting the team to discuss how your skills and availability fit with roles on offer.
