Bristol Animal Rescue Centre cares for thousands of sick, injured and stray animals every year – and we couldn’t do this vital work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers come to us for many different reasons, but are united in their enthusiasm and commitment to great animal welfare.
As part of Volunteer’s week this year, we’re showcasing our volunteers’ stories and what drives them to work with us. Justine has been with us for many years helping the Animal Care Team. Here, she tells us about her role.
What volunteer role do you do?
I volunteer three or four mornings a week and wherever help is needed. I work mostly with the cats and rabbits and I love spending time with them. I help with cleaning their pens, feeding them, washing bowls, cleaning floors, sorting laundry or anything else needed. And most importantly, giving the animals lots of love and cuddles!
How long have you volunteered with us for, and why did you start volunteering with us?
I’ve had the privilege of being a Volunteer here at Bristol Animal Rescue Centre since October 2021. Prior to joining them, I was a volunteer at my children’s school for many years until they moved on to University/Secondary School.
What do you love most about Volunteering with us at Bristol A.R.C.?
Being an animal owner and lover all of my life, I’ve always wanted to work with them and to help them in any way I could. During the Pandemic, we sadly lost our beloved and beautiful cat Archie. He was such a huge member of our family and losing him was too emotional to put into words. The grief of losing a pet is heart breaking. They are part of your family and life, giving you unconditional love and support. A cuddle from them always seems to make things a little bit brighter. After losing Archie, I wasn’t ready to adopt another cat but I did have lots of time and love to give to those animals in need which is why, when I was given this amazing opportunity to volunteer here, it meant so much to me. Anything I can do that helps to give that extra time to the wonderful staff who work here to do other vital things is so important. They work exceptionally hard and it’s so clear to see how much they love and care for all the animals here. I am made to feel so welcome and appreciated and hope that whatever little I can do is making a difference to all the lovely staff and animals. Being a volunteer here has given me a much needed purpose in life and means so much to me. So many animals are rescued here but they have also helped rescue me too.
