Captain and Lolly, love is the new wind beneath their wings

Once a month or so domestic birds enter Bristol Animal Rescue Centre. Once checked over thoroughly for bird flu and any other health issues they are welcomed by our animal care team.

Captain, a cockatiel, arrived in September after being found in a garden, unable to fly. Though he could flap his wings, he could only lift a metre off the ground. A vet check revealed missing feathers and an old chest injury. With gentle care, a special cage full of climbing toys, and plenty of enrichment, Captain began to regain his strength and enjoy a quality of life with his feet on the ground (or a perch!).

A month later, another cockatiel named Lolly came to us via a local vet after suffering multiple injuries, likely from a bird or cat attack. She recovered well but, like Captain, was also unable to fly. Both birds loved their mirrors and enjoyed watching cockatiel videos, so we decided to see if they might enjoy each other’s company.

After a couple of weeks of gentle introductions, Captain and Lolly have become inseparable, with mirrors only now required to admire their own beauty. Now they spend their days singing, playing, and keeping each other company, a beautiful reminder that love and happiness can flourish, even when wings can’t.
