“These Dogs Are Just for Christmas”, Our Urgent Appeal for Experienced Foster Homes This Festive Season
Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C.) has launched its ‘These Dogs Are Just for Christmas’ campaign to find urgent foster homes for dogs struggling in kennels over the festive period and beyond.
While Christmas is a time of comfort and celebration for many, for the dogs in Bristol A.R.C.’s care; especially active, working breeds or those with complex behaviours; it can be one of the hardest times of year. Despite the team’s dedicated enrichment activities and expert behaviour support, life in kennels can be stressful and overwhelming for dogs that thrive on routine, space, and human companionship.
Bristol A.R.C. usually can rely on a large network of foster carers to provide short-term homes for dogs who need extra support. However, during the festive period, many regular foster families are away, hosting visitors, or holding gatherings; situations that some nervous or reactive dogs simply can’t cope with.
The charity is now urgently seeking foster families planning quieter Christmases, who can open their homes and hearts to a dog in need, over this period and beyond.
“Whilst we have a very strong foster network – these dogs have specific needs at a period of time that can be stressful for pets and people alike.” said Kayleigh Jefferies, Foster Coordinator from Bristol A.R.C.
“We love our current foster families but have identified a need for support from homes without resident animals, no children and generally planning a quiet Christmas. Experience with behavioural issues would be really valuable”
Bristol A.R.C. provides everything needed: food, bedding, toys, and veterinary care, completely free of charge. Foster carers offer time, love, and stability, giving these dogs the best possible chance of finding their forever homes.
To foster, applicants should live within a 30-minute drive of Bristol Animal Rescue Centre and be able to provide a calm, stable environment and transport the dog for appointments if needed.
Meet Some of the Dogs Waiting This Christmas
Peggy – A sweet, three-legged Collie with a huge heart. Intelligent, affectionate, and playful once she feels safe, Peggy finds kennel life especially tough. She’s looking for a quiet home with a garden where she can gain confidence at her own pace.
Drax – A one-year-old Pocket Bully who came into our care as a stray. Though now healthy, he finds long periods in kennels difficult and urgently needs a foster home where he can enjoy comfort, enrichment, and companionship.
Phil – A bright and energetic two-year-old Kelpie cross who loves to learn and stay busy. Phil is looking for an active foster home that can keep his sharp mind and energetic body occupied while helping him polish his lead manners.
“Inviting one of these dogs over the Christmas period (and beyond!) is such a gift of true kindness,” added Kayleigh. “Companionship helps a dog feel safe, loved, and ready for their next chapter.”
