Finding Home on the Water

Some of you may remember little Joseph, one half of the pair of frightened puppies who arrived in a washing basket just before Christmas. Now known as Rico, this once timid pup has begun a completely different kind of life – one full of adventure, as he now lives aboard a narrowboat.

When Rico first arrived with us, he found kennel life a little daunting with the constant noise and activity around him. He was a sensitive little soul, showing lots of appeasement behaviours. It was clear he wanted to trust, he just needed time and reassurance to feel safe.

Our team gently supported him using calming music and enrichment like snuffle mats to help him relax, and before long Rico was moved into a foster home. In this quieter, more settled environment, he began to come out of his shell, his sweet and curious personality starting to shine through. As his confidence grew, it became clear he was ready for his next chapter, and he soon found his perfect match in Tallulah, who welcomed him into a calm yet adventurous new life living on a narrowboat.

Tallulah says she was immediately drawn to his gentle nature, noticing his soft and inquisitive character from their very first meeting. Each day brings something new. From peaceful countryside moorings to bustling towpaths, Rico is constantly exploring new sights, sounds and smells.

One of his favourite pastimes is watching the world go by from the window.

He’ll even lick a little patch of the glass so he can get the clearest view of all the comings and goings along the canal. Although it’s been a big change for such a small dog, Rico has taken to life on the boat all in his stride and has quickly made the space his own.

Like any young dog, Rico has plenty of spirit and is always keen to make new friends along the towpath. Tallulah also shared some of his endearing quirks, including getting the hiccups when he’s feeling a little overwhelmed during training- something that’s as sweet as it is unusual.

Above all, Rico has become a constant companion for Tallulah, bringing comfort, company and a sense of joy to this unique way of life.

From a nervous puppy to a curious explorer on the water, Rico’s journey is a lovely reminder that every animal just needs the right home – even if it’s a little unconventional.
