When COVID hit and travel was restricted, Lesley didn’t let it stop her from taking on the challenge of the famous City to Surf run in Sydney. Instead, she created her own version right here in Bristol, mapping out a route and asking friends and family to sponsor her in support of Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C.). Inspired by the dedication of our staff working through difficult times, Lesley ran her Bristol City to Surf for two consecutive years, raising crucial funds for our charity.
Then, with a return to Australia on the horizon, Lesley signed up for the real City to Surf with some trepidation. Having not run long distances for some time, she knew it would be a challenge. But she was determined. She trained when she could and swapped birthday gifts for sponsorships to raise even more for Bristol A.R.C.
The City to Surf is no ordinary run. Spanning 14km from Sydney’s CBD to Bondi Beach, the event draws around 90,000 participants, many in wild costumes, cheered on by crowds lining the streets with music blasting at every turn. Lesley started slowly, feeling the pressure to run the whole way. She tackled the infamous Heartbreak Hill and, despite the rising heat, kept going. As the coast came into view, a cooling breeze lifted her spirits for the final push.
Crossing the finish line, Lesley was exhausted but elated. “I was as red as a lobster,” she laughed, but the sense of accomplishment and the buzzing atmosphere at Bondi Beach made every step worthwhile.
Lesley’s story shows us the power of perseverance and the impact of one person’s dedication. From running in Bristol to crossing the finish line at Bondi, she has raised vital funds and awareness for BARC. Inspired by Lesley? Why not take on your own challenge for Bristol A.R.C.? Every effort helps make a difference!
