A Church, a Cat, and a Second Chance
Onyx, a stunning silver Bengal mix with a short tail, arrived at Bristol A.R.C. as a stray after spending several weeks in the Brislington area. Extremely fearful and difficult to catch, he showed no obvious signs of illness or injury but was clearly not comfortable with human handling.
While Onyx is not a tame cat and remains uncomfortable with touch, he has made steady progress during his time with us. With patience and consistency, he has learned to trust staff in his own way, happily sitting nearby, taking treats from the hand, and engaging in play. He is currently undergoing carrier training, which will continue in his new home.
Due to his nature, Onyx was never suited to a traditional home environment. Instead, he has now begun a new chapter as a church cat at Downend Baptist Church.
The church has carefully prepared a warm, quiet, and private space for him, complete with climbing shelves, safe hiding areas, and a lockable cat flap. A large garden at the rear of the building will provide plenty of outdoor exploration once he has settled. Initially, Onyx will remain indoors to help him adjust.
A dedicated care team will check on him daily, ensuring his welfare while respecting his need for minimal handling. To ease the transition, Onyx was even gently introduced to church sounds, including organ music, during his time at Bristol A.R.C.
Onyx’s journey shows that not every cat needs a conventional home, just the right one. We’re thrilled to see him settled into a space where he can live life on his own terms.
