Adopting an elderly pet can be a deeply rewarding experience for both the animal and adopter, we have lots of elderly animals coming to us after they have been abandoned, or if their owner can no longer cope/has fallen ill.
Whilst we appreciate that adopting an elderly pet may feel like setting yourself up for heartbreak, it’s important to also understand all the benefits of giving an older pet a home and the many joys it can bring to your life:
1. Saving a Life: Older pets often have a harder time getting adopted, by choosing to adopt an elderly pet, you are giving a deserving animal a second chance at a happy life.
2. Calmer Temperament: Senior pets typically have a calmer and more settled temperament. They are past the energetic and destructive puppy or kitten stage, which can make them a good fit for quiet, calm households.
3. Predictable Personality: With an older pet, their personality and temperament are usually already well-established, meaning it can be easier to integrate them into your life.
4. Lower Energy Levels: If you’re not as active as you used to be, an elderly pet might be a perfect match. They usually require less exercise and are content with a cosy spot to rest, and someone to keep them company.
5. Training and Housebroken: Many senior pets are already trained and housebroken, saving you the time and worry that goes into training a younger pet.
6. Unconditional Love: Older pets might come with health issues, but they still offer unconditional love. Despite their age, they provide love and companionship to any home. They are ready to love and are incredibly appreciative of the love you’re bringing into their life.
7. Sense of Fulfilment: Taking care of an elderly pet can provide a profound sense of fulfillment. Knowing that you’re providing comfort and love to an animal in their twilight years can be incredibly rewarding. Whilst we do all we can to provide exceptional care and love for each animal, they deserve to spend their remaining years in a loving forever home.
8. Support for Animal Rescue Centres: Older pets tend to take the longest to find a forever home, by choosing to adopt, you’re supporting charities like ours – it frees up vital space for other animals waiting to be saved.
When choosing to adopt an elderly pet there are always going to be potential challenges that must be considered, such as health issues that may require special care and attention. However, we hope this has shed some light on how choosing to adopt an elderly pet can enrich your life in so many different ways. Check out the animals waiting for their forever home here.
