Step 3 – Adoption
After your meet and greet appointment, and if everyone is happy to proceed, the Rehoming Team will place a reserve on the animal (if adopting a cat or a dog you will need to pay a small fee of £20 to secure this) and they’ll book in a suitable adoption date. Please note, in some cases you may need to visit again before booking in the adoption date.
We will also need to see video and/or photos of your living arrangements before the adoption can be completed. Normally we would arrange a home visit with you with one our friendly Home Visitor Volunteers, however, in light of COVID – 19 this will likely be done virtually, such as through a live video call, we can talk through this with you when you come in for your appointment.
All of our animals are treated by our Veterinary Clinic before adoption. Meaning they will have had a recent vet check-up and (depending on species) they will have be neutered and micro-chipped. We will take you through all the animals medical history and needs, plus any additional care requirements before your meet and greet appointment.
Once we have completed all of these stages, and the adoption is confirmed, you will be asked to pay your adoption fee – our adoptions fees are listed below. We accept cash and debit/credit card as payment.
Guinea Pigs: £20
Birds: £15 plus depending on species
Other small animals: (e.g. Rats & Hamsters) £5 plus
Exotics/Reptiles: - £25 plus depending on species.
* Please note these prices are subject to change
As mentioned, our adoption fees include the vet check-up, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, neutering and microchipping – this fee doesn’t begin to cover the cost of looking after one of the animals in our care, from food to heating and everything in between, the cost for each animal we look after is far greater. If you are able to make a donation on top of this fee we would be truly grateful to you – please just let our team know.
We can also provide you with information about a special offer for 4 weeks’ free pet insurance with RSPCA Insurance (Covea).
Taking your new pet home
The most exciting day of all. The day you get to take your new pet home, there’s nothing quite like it!
The date and time will be arranged between you and our Rehoming team after your meet and greet appointment and details will be provided to you about what you need to bring and do on the day.
To comply with new Covid-19 health and safety procedures, dogs will be handed over at our back gate using a safe and tested method with leads. Cats and other smalls/exotics will be placed in a carrier or an appropriate and safe container and placed in reception for collection.
But please don’t worry, staff will explain all the nitty gritty bits to you beforehand. So all you’ll need to worry about is showering your new pet with love!
