Philippa Carey - Chair of the Board of Trustees
Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
I reached a stage in my life where I decided that
rather than keep ‘taking’ from society I should give back and do something
charitable. I absolutely adore animals so thought working with Bristol A.R.C.
would be the perfect fit.
Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I (actually my mum!) has a hairy pug called Tilly and a 3 legged Yorkie called Scamp. Both of which were rescue animals from Bristol A.R.C. They actually live with my mum as she is retired so can spend much more time with them during the day than I am able. But they are family so I refer to them as mine!
What do you do when you aren’t being a Trustee?
I run a clothing boutique selling pre-loved designer clothes and look after Freddie, my 2 year old son. I don’t have too much time for hobbies but try and watch Bristol Rugby when I can.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
My late father Philip Parker was a Trustee of the Bristol Dogs Home and Bristol Branch of the RSPCA; his great uncle Edward T Parker was one of the founders of the Home. When I was growing up we were always surrounded by various pets and I had an albino guinea pig who lived for 16 years. One day my father came back from the Bristol Dogs Home with Simon who was a Great Dane. In 1985 I was invited by the Trustees to attend an auction conducted by Edward T Parker and Company where we bought the Wincome Trading Estate for the Bristol Dogs Home (this covers the new part of the Home). I then joined the Committee to help with the Bristol Dogs Home Centenary Year celebrations. I held the positon of Honorary Chairman from 1988 to 2015 and now I'm the President.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
I was approached by the Secretary of the Board, the late John Bonner. I have been a long term dog walker for over 20 years and he thought I would make a strong member of the existing Board. I wanted to make a difference to those in our care and believe that we are running a business in a very competitive charitable sector. Having a small retail business allows me to appreciate this.
Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I have a crossbreed Collie/Australian Shepherd whose nickname is Velcro - because he sticks to you! His real name is Fletcher. I adopted him in September 2005 from Bristol A.R.C.. He was judged overall winner of the RSPCA rescue dog show in 2006 and went on to the national finals. In 2008 he was again judged as best rescue dog and then best in show.

I love to travel, and have travelled to the Arctic Circle , and walked The Inca Trail in 2018. I look after my 2 grandchildren. I am also a member of a History and a Natural History Group.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
I became involved with the RSPCA when I was asked to be one of the original panel members for the RSPCA Oversight Prosecutions Panel. This was a really interesting role and enabled me to get a real insight into the work that the RSPCA do. I was then asked if I would be interested in being a Trustee for Bristol ARC and initially I was not really sure what this involved. As a veterinarian I have a keen interest in animal welfare and was really pleased when I was officially asked to be a member of the Board of Trustees.
Do you have a pet?
Tell us about them! I have one dog called Paddy. Paddy is a mongrel (yes not a crossbreed) who came to me via a rehoming charity where he was taken in as a stray from Ireland. He is tri-colour and is now about 10 years old. He is a real character and is currently testing all that I know with regards to dog behaviour.
What do you do when you aren’t being a Trustee?
When not being a Trustee I am involved with a number of different organisations where I provide veterinary advice on welfare and behaviour matters and also through education and research.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee? Animal rights and welfare are important to me. Bristol A.R.C. does fantastic work helping, healing and homing Bristol's animals in need, and supports those who love and care for animals.
Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I don’t have pets (due to allergies, sadly) so wanted to get involved and help.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
I have worked in corporate governance roles for over 25 years as a qualified Company Secretary and Governance Professional and I wanted to bring my governance experience to Bristol A.R.C. and assist it in maintaining the highest standards of governance. My many years of experience in the boardrooms of a range of organisations have provided me with a deep understanding of technical governance issues and the roles and responsibilities of Directors and Trustees and it has been very rewarding for me to share that experience in a Trustee role. I also have a genuine interest in the welfare of Bristol’s animals, with various family members having adopted numerous cats and dogs from Bristol A.R.C. over the years.
Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I have an elderly Boston Terrier called Roxy, who keeps us entertained daily with her puppy-like enthusiasm for play and numerous facial expressions!
What do you do when you aren’t being a Trustee?
I'm an Associate Director at Link Asset Services and so when I'm not helping companies with their corporate governance arrangements, I love long walks in the fresh air with Roxy and my family, especially those that end up with good food! I also enjoy travelling, especially city breaks, and my husband and I have enjoyed numerous motorcycling holidays over the years.

Why did you decide to become a Trustee?
When I retired early I wanted something away from a desk so started helping at Riding for the Disabled. I took up riding myself and my interest in animals began. I was approached by a friend who was already a Trustee and I was keen to help to ensure the welfare of animals and staff. I've been around for a long time, and things have changed in that time, but I am still enjoying the journey.
Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I have two lovely cats - Poppy and Daisy, adopted from Bristol A.R.C. They are both very affectionate and I adore them. Knowing they have to go out each morning gets me up!

Do you have a pet? Tell us about them!
I've had a number of dogs over the years with the most recent one being a lovely, gentle Newfoundland. I've always felt that humans can learn a lot from dogs. "Being yourself" and "living in the moment" are just two things which Zoe, our 'Newfie' taught us!
